Crochet Mini Christmas Wreath Ornament — Free Crochet Pattern

A tiny wreath for your tree, your gift tags or your window. This green ring with cream popcorn bobbles and a red bow is flat, quick and good for beginners. Make one in an hour, or make a whole set.

You only need three colors of cotton yarn and a few basic stitches.

What you need

  • Yarn: worsted weight (medium 4) cotton in forest green (#4F7A3F), cream (#F1E7D2) and red (#255ea5). One ornament uses about 15 g of green and a few meters of cream and red.
  • Hook: 4 mm (US G-6). Use a hook a little smaller than the yarn label so the stitches are firm.
  • Tools: tapestry needle, scissors, a little polyfill for the bobbles.

Abbreviations and size

  • ch chain
  • sl st slip stitch
  • sc single crochet
  • hdc half double crochet
  • dc double crochet
  • inc 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec sc 2 together
  • blo back loop only
  • sp space
  • st(s) stitch(es)
  • magic ring adjustable starting loop

Size: about 9 cm (3.5 in) across, with a hole of about 4 cm. Time: about 1 hour.

Wreath ring

  1. Foundation: With green, ch 24 and join with a sl st to the first ch to make a ring. Do not twist the chain.
  2. Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around. Join. [24 sc]
  3. Round 2: Ch 1, *sc in the next 3 sts, inc; repeat from * 5 more times. Join. [30 sc]
  4. Round 3: Ch 1, *sc in the next 4 sts, inc; repeat from * 5 more times. Join. [36 sc]
  5. Round 4: Ch 1, *sc in the next 5 sts, inc; repeat from * 5 more times. Join. [42 sc]
  6. Round 5: Ch 1, *sc in the next 6 sts, inc; repeat from * 5 more times. Join. [48 sc]
  7. Round 6: Ch 1, *sc in the next 7 sts, inc; repeat from * 5 more times. Join. [54 sc] Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Tip: the wreath should lie flat. If it curls like a bowl, you have too few stitches. If it ruffles, you have too many. Count again.

Popcorn bobbles (make 8)

  1. With cream, round 1: magic ring, 6 sc. [6]
  2. Round 2: inc in each st. [12]
  3. Round 3: sc in each st. [12]
  4. Round 4: dec 6 times. [6] Stuff with a tiny bit of polyfill, fasten off and close the hole.

Sew the 8 bobbles evenly around the ring, about 2 cm apart, keeping one empty space at the top for the bow.

Red bow

  1. Bow: With red, ch 11. Row 1: hdc in the 2nd ch from the hook and across. [10 hdc] Rows 2–8: ch 1, turn, hdc across. [10 hdc] Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
  2. Tails (make 2): Ch 9. Row 1: hdc in the 2nd ch from the hook and across. [8 hdc] Rows 2–6: ch 1, turn, hdc across. [8 hdc]
  3. Knot: Ch 5. Row 1: sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and across. [4 sc] Rows 2–5: ch 1, turn, sc across. [4 sc]

Seam the short ends of the bow together to make a loop. Flatten it with the seam in the middle at the back and pinch the center. Wrap the knot around the middle and sew the ends at the back. Sew the 2 tails under the knot in a V shape.

Hanging loop and finishing

  • With green, ch 20. Fold the chain in half and sew both ends to the back of the wreath at the top.
  • Sew the bow on the front at the top, over the loop ends.
  • Weave in all the ends. Press the wreath flat under a damp cloth if it needs help.

More wreath ideas

  • Red twisted wreath: use red and work every round of the ring in the back loop only. Add 3 white bobbles and 2 green leaves at the top for mistletoe.
  • Cream twisted wreath: cream ring with 2 green leaves and 3 red berries (magic ring, 6 sc) for holly.
  • Cream bobble wreath: cream ring covered with 12 small bobbles, and a small red bow.
  • A set of four: make all four colors and hang them together on your tree or a garland.

Tips for success

  • Use cotton. It keeps its shape and the stitches show clearly.
  • Keep the stitches tight. A firm ring does not sag when you hang it.
  • Make the bobbles the same size. Count your stitches.
  • Make them as gifts. They are quick and fit in a card envelope.
