Crochet Pink Five-Petal Flower Bedspread — Free Crochet Pattern

Five soft coral pink petals, a ring of cream pearls in the middle and a scalloped cream edge. Every round motif in this bedspread is a little flower, and together they cover the bed like a garden.

The motif is worked from the center out in rounds. The pearls are simple popcorn stitches, and the petals are ribbed rounds with a cream outline. Make one motif first and you will see how it all fits.

What you need

  • Yarn: worsted weight (medium 4) cotton in 2 colors: coral pink (#E4607A) and cream (#FFF4E0).
  • Hook: 4 mm (US G-6). Go up or down a size if your motif is too tight or floppy.
  • Tools: tapestry needle, scissors, stitch markers, blocking mats and pins.
  • How much yarn?: estimate for a queen bedspread (65 motifs): about 1,900 m (2,080 yd) of coral and 2,300 m (2,500 yd) of cream, including joins, flowers and border. For a better number, make and weigh one motif, multiply by 65, then add 15%.

How to crochet the five-petal flower motif

Each motif has a cluster of 5 cream pearls, then 5 ribbed coral petals, then a cream outline and lace shells. Work every round with the right side facing you. The number in brackets is your stitch check.

  1. Round 1 (cream, pearls): Make a magic ring. Ch 3, 3 dc in the ring, close as a popcorn. *Ch 2, popcorn (4 dc) in the ring; repeat from * 3 more times. Ch 2 and join to the top of the first popcorn. [5 popcorns, 5 ch-2 sps]
  2. Round 2 (coral): Join coral in a ch-2 sp. Ch 1, 3 sc in each ch-2 sp and 1 sc in the top of each popcorn. Join. [20 sc]
  3. Round 3: Ch 1, *sc in the next st, inc in the next st; repeat from * around. Join. [30 sc]
  4. Round 4: Ch 1, *sc in the next 2 sts, inc in the next st; repeat from * around. Join. [40 sc, 8 per petal]
  5. Round 5 (ribbed petals): Ch 1, sc blo in each st around. Join. [40 sc] The back loops give the ribbed look.
  6. Round 6 (cream outline): Join cream. Ch 1. In each petal of 8 sts work: sc, hdc, dc, 2 dc in the next st, 2 dc in the next st, dc, hdc, sc. Repeat for all 5 petals. Join. [50 sts, 10 per petal]
  7. Round 7 (lace loops): Ch 1. In each petal work: sc in the first st, (ch 3, skip 1 st, sc in the next st) 4 times, sc in the last st. Join. [20 ch-3 loops]
  8. Round 8 (shells): In each ch-3 loop work (sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc). Join and fasten off. [20 shells] The shells make the scalloped flower outline.

Tip: keep the popcorns loose and push each one forward as you go. If the count in any round is off, fix it before you move on, because the 5 petals only sit evenly when the numbers are right.

Join the motifs

  • Make all motifs and block them flat before you join.
  • Lay them in rows of 7 and 6, offset by half a motif. Every motif touches 6 neighbors at the tips of its petals.
  • Join as you go: in Round 8, where two shells touch, drop the loop, insert the hook into the middle dc of the neighbor shell, pull the dropped loop through and carry on.
  • Gap flowers: every gap between three motifs gets a tiny coral flower. Make a magic ring, *ch 3, sl st in the ring; repeat 5 times, pull tight and sew it into the gap. You need about 105.
  • A coral sheet under the bedspread makes the open lace stand out.

Border

  1. Round 1 (cream): Join cream at any shell. Ch 1, sc evenly around the whole edge, 3 sc in each outer corner. Join.
  2. Round 2 (shells): Ch 1, *skip 2 sts, 5 dc in the next st, skip 2 sts, sc in the next st; repeat from * around. Join.
  3. Round 3 (picots): Sl st to the middle dc of a shell. *(Sc, ch 3, sc) in the middle dc, sc in the next sc; repeat from * around. Join and fasten off.

Matching cushion

  • Cover size: about 40 x 40 cm (16 x 16 in).
  • Make 1 motif, then add a cream round of 3 dc in each lace loop and 1 sc between to round it out. Block it to a square-ish shape.
  • Sew it to the front of a ready-made cream or coral cushion cover. The back stays plain, so you only crochet one motif.

Tips for success

  • Block every motif. Pin each one to the same size, then let it dry. Joining is much easier.
  • Count the petals. If a round ends with the wrong number, rip back. The 5 petals are the whole design.
  • Keep the pearls even. Pull each popcorn to the front so they look like beads.
  • Weigh a motif. It tells you how much yarn you really need.
  • Make flowers while you watch TV. The gap flowers are small and quick.

Ways to change this pattern

  • One color pearls: make the pearls in coral for a softer look.
  • Other colors: sage green and cream, or navy and cream, look just as good.
  • Throw size: 5 rows of 7 and 6 for a sofa blanket.
  • Single motif: make one as a coaster, a cushion front or a gift topper.

Frequently asked questions

What skill level do I need?

You should know the chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet. The pearls and the petals are a small challenge, but they are easy once you repeat them.

How long does it take?

One motif takes about 1.5 hours. The full set takes 10 to 12 weeks if you make a few motifs each day.

What is the best yarn?

A smooth cotton or cotton blend gives the sharpest stitches and the clearest lace. Avoid fuzzy yarns because they hide the pattern.

How do I wash it?

Hand wash in cool water with mild soap or use a gentle machine cycle. Press the water out with a towel and dry it flat on a clean towel.

Can I make it for a twin or king bed?

Yes. Add or remove motifs per row and the number of rows. Measure your mattress first and add the drop you want on each side.

Can I sell things I make from this pattern?

Yes, you can sell finished items. Please credit this website as the designer and do not copy or share the written pattern.
